ISBA 2004

Foreword

ISBA 2004 represents the continuation of a series of world meetings in Bayesian statistics that started a decade ago:

  • 1993, First World Meeting of ISBA, San Francisco, U.S.A.
  • 1994, Second World Meeting of ISBA-SPAIN.
  • 1995, Third World Meeting of ISBA-Oaxaca, Mexico.
  • 1996, Fourth World Meeting of ISBA- Cape Town, South Africa.
  • 1997, Fifth World Meeting of ISBA, Istanbul, Turkey.
  • 2000, Sixth World Meeting of ISBA, Hersonissos, Greece.
This is the first time that the ISBA meeting is going to be held in South America, particularly in Chile, which has a small community of Bayesians grouped under one of the three existing local Chapters of ISBA. I would like to mention that all over Latin America the interest in Bayesian Statistics has markedly grown, as reflected in several local and regional workshops and conferences that have taken place over the last few years. ISBA has given valuable support and stimulus to all these meetings.

The Scientific Committee chaired by Fabrizio Ruggeri has given special attention to programming basic and advanced level tutorials, debates, invited and student sessions, and the always popular poster sessions. All these efforts aim at making ISBA 2004 not only a meeting of the highest academic level, but also an attraction pole for the Latin American statistical community, students and scientist from other disciplines.

For us it is a great honor to bring ISBA 2004 to Chile, but it also represents a great responsibility. We are committed to provide the hospitality and friendship the participants of an event of this kind deserve, while making all the necessary efforts for ISBA 2004 to become a scientific and social success. In this regard, we want to deeply thank all the help and support given to us by the following academic institutions: Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Universidad de Valparaíso, Universidad de Talca, Universidad de Santiago, Universidad de las Américas and by the following governmental institutions: Intendencia de la Quinta Región, Municipalidad de Valparaíso y Municipalidad de Viña del Mar.

We invite you to attend ISBA 2004 and to keep visiting our web page http://isba.mat.puc.cl. If you have any ideas regarding social events, please contact any of the Coordinators Carlos Henríquez (carlos.henriquez@uv.cl) or Víctor Leiva (victor.leiva@uv.cl).

Cordially,

Pilar Iglesias Z (Chair of the Local Organizing Committee)
